4 And sent Jacob messengers (malachim) before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom 5 And he commanded them, saying: 'thus speak to my lord (adonai) Esau; thus says your servant Jacob: with Laban I have dwelt (garti) and stayed there until now 6 and have I oxen and donkeys and flocks and menservants and maidservants. And I have sent (vayeshlach) to tell my lord, that I may find favour (chen) in your sight'. 7 And returned the messengers to Jacob, saying, 'we came (banu) to your brother, Esau and also he is coming to meet you and four hundred men are with him'.

8 So was afraid (ira) Jacob greatly and distressed (yatzar). Unto him he then divided (chatzah) the people that were with him and the flocks, herds and camels in two camps. 9 And he said, 'if comes Esau to one camp and attacks (hikahu) it, then the other camp will escape (fleitah)'. 10 And said Jacob, 'G-d (El-hei) of my father Abraham and G-d (El-hei) of my father Isaac, G-d (Y-hova) the one saying to me,  return to your country and to your family and I will deal well (yatav) with you. 11 I am not worthy (katoneti) of all the kindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown Your servant; for with my staff I crossed over this Jordan and now I have become two camps. 12 Deliver me (hatsileini), I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau. For I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the sons. 13 For You said, 'surely (heitev)  I will treat you well (eitev) and make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude'.

14 So he lodged there that night and took of that what came to his hand as a present (mincha) for Esau his brother; 15 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 16 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. 17 And he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every herd by itself.

And said to his servants, 'pass over (ivru) before me and some distance (revach) put between herd and herd'. 18 And he commanded the first one, saying: 'when Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying: 'to whom do you belong? and where are you going? and to whom are these in front of you?' 19 then you shall say, 'they belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord, Esau and and, behold, he is also behind us.'

20 And he commanded also the second, and the third and all who followed after the droves, saying: 'in this manner this you shall speak to Esau, when you find (matza) him 21 and say also, 'behold, your servant Jacob is behind us' for he said, 'I will appease him with the present that goes before me and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me'. 22 So went over the present before him but he lodged that night in the camp.

23 And he arose that night and took his two wives and his two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed over the ford of Jabbok. 24 And he took them and sent them over the brook and sent over what he had.

25 And Jacob was left alone (levaddo) and there wrestled (yeavek) a man (ish) with him until the breaking (elot) of the day (hashachar). 26 And when he saw that not he did prevail (yachol) against him, he touched (yiga) the socket (kaf) of his hip (yerech); and was out of joint (teka) the socket of the hip of Jacob, as he wrestled with him. 27 And he said, 'let me go, for the day breaks'. And he said, 'not will I let you go, except you bless me'.

28 And he said to him: 'what is your name?' and he said, 'Jacob'. 29 And he said, 'not Jacob shall be called anymore your name but Israel (ki am Israel) for you have struggled (sarita) with G-d (El-him) and with men and hast prevailed (tukal)'. 30 And asked Jacob and said, 'tell (haggidah) me please (na) your name'. And he said, 'why this do you ask about my name?' And he blessed him there.

31 And called Jacob the name of the place Peniel (Peniel) 'for I have seen (raiti) G-d (El-him) face (panim) to face and is preserved my life'. 32 And rose (yizrach) on him the sun as he crossed over Penuel (Penuel) and he limped (tzoleah) upon his thigh. 33 Upon thus, not do eat the children of Israel the sinew (gid) the tendon (hanasheh) which is on the hip socket (kaf) of the thigh (yarech), to this day because he touched the socket of hip of Jacob, even in the sinew the tendon.

1 And lifted Jacob his eyes and looked and behold, Esau was coming and with him four hundred men. And he divided the sons unto Leah and unto Rachel and unto the two maidservants. 2 And he put the maidservants and their children first (rishonah) and Leah and her children after them (acharon) and Rachel with Joseph after behind (acharonim).

3 And he crossed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. 4 And ran Esau to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him. And they wept.

5 And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and the children and said, 'who are these with you?' And he said, 'the sons whom G-d (El-him) has graciously given (chanan) your servant'. 6 And came near (nagash) the maidservants, they and their children and they bowed down (shachah). 7 And came near also Leah with her children and bowed down. And afterwards came near Joseph and Rachel and they bowed down.

8 And he said, 'who to all this camp (machaneh) which I met (pagasheti)?' And he said, 'to find favour in the eyes of my lord'. 9 And said Esau, 'I have a lot (rav), my brother, keep what you have for yourself'. 10 And said Jacob, 'no please (na), if now I have found favour in your sight, then receive (velakachta) my present from my hand; that on thus I have seen your face, as though I had seen the face of G-d (El-him) and you were pleased (ratza) with me. 11 Take, I pray, this my blessing that is brought to you because G-d (El-him) has dealt graciously with me and because I have everything (kol)'. And he urged (yiftzar) him and he took it.

12 And he said, 'let us take our journey and let us go and I will go before you'. 13 And he said to him: 'lord knows that the sons are weak (rakkim) and the flocks and herds are nursing and if they driven hard one day they will die all the flock. 14 Let go on ahead I pray my lord before his servant and I will lead (etnahala) on slowly (le'iti), at a pace (regel) which the livestock that go before me are able to endure (uleregel) and the sons, until that I come to my lord in Seir'.

15 And said Esau, 'let me leave now with you some of the people who are with me'. And he said, 'why this? Let me find favour in the sight of my lord'. 16 So returned that day Esau on his way to Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth (Sucotah) and built himself a house (bayit) and for his livestock made booths (succot). Upon thus the name of the place is Succoth. 18 And came Jacob in peace (shalem) to the city of Shechem (Shechem), which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-Aram (Aram) and encamped (vayichan) before the city. 19 And he bought the parcel of the land where he had pitched (natah) his tent, from the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred units of money (kesitah). 20 And he erected there an altar and called it 'E- El-hei Israel'.

1 And went out Dinah (Dinah) the daughter (bat) of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, to see (lirot) the daughters of the land (aretz). 2 And when saw her Shechem (Shekem) son of Hamor (Chamor) the Hivite (Chivi), the prince (nesi) of the region, then he took (yikach) her and lay (yishkav) with her and violated (yaneha) her. 3 And was strongly attracted (tidbak) his soul (nafsho) to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob. And he loved the young woman (naarah) and spoke to the young woman from his heart (ul lev). 4 So spoke Shechem to his father Hamor, saying, "get me this young woman as a wife".

5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled (timmay) Dinah his daughter but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob held his peace (hecheresh) until they came. 6 And went out Hamor, father of Shechem to Jacob to speak with him. 7 And the sons of Jacob heard it when they came in from the field and were grieved (yitatzevu) the men and very angry (yichar) because he had committed an outrage (nevalah) in Israel by lying (lishkav) with the daughter of  Jacob's; this thing ought not to be done (veken lo ye'aseh).

8 But spoke Hamor with them saying, "Shechem my son longs (chasheka) for the soul of your daughter. Give please her to him as his wife. 9 And make marriages (hitchateinu) with us; your daughters give to us and our daughters take for yourselves. 10 With us you may dwell and the land will be before you. Dwell (shevu) and trade in it (u'secharuha) and acquire possessions (heachazu) for yourself in it".

11 And said Shechem to her father and brothers, "let me find favor in your eyes and whatever you say to me I will give. 12 Ask me a great dowry (mohar) and gift (mattan) and I will give according to what you say to me. But give me the young woman as a wife"

13 And answered the sons of Jacob to Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully (mirmah) and spoke because he had defiled Dinah their sister. 14 And they said to them, "we cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised (arelah), for a reproach (cherpah) that would be to us. 15 But in this we will consent (ne'ot) to you, if you will become (ti'yu) as we are, if is circumcised (mul) of you every male. 16 Then we will give our daughters to you and your daughters we will take to us. And we will dwell (yashavnu) with you and become one people. 17 But if not you will heed (tishme'u) us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone (halachenu)."

18 And pleased (yatav) their words (divrehem) Hamor and Shechem, son of Hamor. 19 So not did delay (echar) the young man to do the thing because he was delighted (chafetz) with Jacob's daughter and he was more honourable (nicbad) than all the household of his father.

20 And came Hamor and his son Shechem to the gate of their city and spoke with the men of their city, saying,  21 "these men are at peace (shelemim) with us, therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it for the land is indeed large (rachavat) enough (yadayim) for them. Their daughters let us take to us as wives and our daughters let us give them. 22 Only in this will the men consent (ye'otu) to dwell (leshavet) with us and be one people - if it is circumcised among us every male as they are circumcised. 23 Their livestock and their property and every animal of theirs, will not (halo) ours (lanu no word reference) they be? Only let us consent to them and they will dwell with us".

24 And heeded to Hamor and his son Shechem all who went out of the gate of the city and was uncircumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city. 25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain (koavim) that took two of the sons of Jacob, SImeon and Levi, brothers of Dinah, each his sword (charbo) and came (yavou) upon the city (ha'ir) boldy (betach) and killed all the males. 26 And Hamor and his son Shechem they killed with edge (lehfi) of the sword and took Dinah from the house of Shechem and went.

27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain (hachalalim) and they plundered (yavozzu) the city because had been defiled their sister. 28 Unto their sheep (tzonam) and their oxen (bekaram) and their donkeys (chamor) and what was in the city and what was in the field they took. 29 And all their wealth and all their little children (tapam) and their wives they took captive (shavu) and they plundered even all that was in their houses.

30 And said Jacob to Simeon and Levi, "you have troubled (achartem) me by making me repugnant amongst the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and Perizzites. Since I am few in number, if they unite (ne'esfu) against me and attack (hikuni) me then I will be destroyed (nishmad'ti); I and my household". 31 But they said, "should like a harlot (haczonah) he treat our sister?"

1 And said G-d (El-him)  to Jacob, "arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there and make there an altar to G-d (E-) who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esav your brother".

2 And said Jacob to his household and all who were with him, "put away (hasiru) the foreign (hannechar) gods (elohei) that are among you and purify (hitaharu) yourselves and change (hachalifu) your garments (simlah). 3 Then let us arise and go to Bethel. I will make there an altar there to G-d (E-), who answered (haoneh) me in my day of distress (tzarati) and He has been (yehi) with me (immadi) in the way (baderech) which I have gone (halacheti)".

4 So they gave Jacob all their foreign gods that where in their hands and the earrings that were in their ears and hid (yitmon) them Jacob under the Terebinth tree (elah) that was by Shechem.

5 As they journeyed and was the terror (chitat) of G-d (El-him) upon the cities that were all around them. And not they did pursue (radefu) the sons of Jacob. 6 So came Jacob to Luz (Luzah) which is in the land of Canaan that is in Bethel; he and all the people with him. 7 And he built there an altar (mizbeach) and he called the place El-Bethel because there appeared (niglu) to him G-d (El-him), when he fled from the face of his brother.

8 And died Deborah (Devorah) nurse (meineket) of Rebekah (Rivkah) and she was buried below Bethel under the oak (alon) so was called the name of it Allon-Bachuth (Allon-Bacut).

9 And appeared G-d to Jacob again when he came from Paddam Aram and blessed him. 10 And said to him G-d, "your name Jacob not shall you be called your name Jacob anymore for since (im) Israel (Yisrael) shall be your name". So he called his name Israel.

11 And said to him G-d (El-him), "I am G-d Almighty (Sh-ddai) - be fruitful (pereh) and multiply (reveh). A nation (goy) and a company (kehal) of nations shall proceed (yiyeh) from you and kings (melachim) from your loins (mechalatzeicha) shall come. 12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac to you I give and to your descendants (ulezaracha) after you I give this land".

13 And went up from him G-d (El-him) in the place where He talked with him. 14 And set up Jacob a pillar (matzevah) in the place where He talked with him; a pillar (matzevet) of stone (aven). And he poured (yitzok) on it a drink offering and he poured on it oil. 15 And he called Jacob the name of place where G-d had spoken with him Bethel.

16 And they journeyed from from Bethel, and when there was but a little land to go from Ephrath (Efratah), then travailed Rachel and was difficult her labour. 17 And it came to pass when she was in severe labor (vehakshotah) that said to her the midwife, "do not (al) fear (tiri) for also this shall be unto you a son".

18 And so it was, as was departing her soul - for she died - that she called his name Ben-oni (oni, from the word aven) but his father called him Benjamin (Vinyamin).

19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 Jacob (Yaacov) set up a pillar on her grave (kevuratah); that is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day. 21 And journeyed Israel (Yisrael) again set out and pitched his tent beyond the Tower of Eder (Migdal Eder). 22 And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in the land that went in Reuben and lay with Bilhah, his father's concubine. And Israel heard (yishama) about it.

And were the sons of Jacob two and ten: 23 The sons of Leah were the firstborn of Jacob, Reuben and Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun. 24 The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. 25 And the sons of Bilhah, maidservant of Rachel were Dan and Naphtali. 26 And the sons of Zilpah maidservant of Leah were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

27 And came Jacob to his father Isaac at Mamre (Mamre), near Kiriath-arba (Quiriat-Arba) (that is, Hebron) (Chevron), where had dwelt Abraham and Isaac. 28 And were the days of Isaac 180 years. 29 So he breathed his last Isaac and died and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And buried him Esau and Jacob his sons.

1 And these are the generations (toldot) of Esau (he is Edom). 2 Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah (Adah) the daughter of Elon (Elon) the Hittite and Aholibamah (Aholivamah) the daughter of Anah (Anah) and daughter of Zibeon (Tziveon) the Hivite, 3 and Basemath (Basemat) daughter of Ishmael, sister of Nebaioth (Nevayot). 4 And bore Adah to Esau Eliphaz (Eliphaz), Basemath bore Reuel (Reuel), 5 and Aholibamah gave birth to Jeush (Yeush), Jalam (Yalam) and Korah (Korah). These were the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.

6 And he took Esau his wives and his sons and his daughters and all the people of his household and his livestock and all his animals and his goods which he had gained (rachash) in Canaan and went to a country away from the presence of Jacob his brother. 7 For were their possessions (rechusham) too great (rav) for them to dwell together and could not the land where they sojourned bear (laset) them because of their livestock. 8 So dwelt Esau in Mount Seir (Behar Seir); Esau is Edom.
