Genesis

Vayetze 28:10-32:3

10 And Jacob went out (vayetze) from Beersheba and went towards Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place (makom) and stayed there all night because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of the place and put it at his head and lay down to sleep in that place.

12 And he dreamed (chalam) and behold a ladder was set up on the earth and its top reached to heaven, and there the angels (malak) of El-him were ascending (alah) and descending (yarad) on it. 13 And behold Y-hova stood above it (alav) and said, "I am the Y-hova, the G-d (El-hei) of your father Abraham and the G-d of Isaac. The land which you lie upon I will give to you and your descendants. 14 And your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth and you shall spread abroad to the west and east and north and south. And shall be blessed in you all the families (mishpechot) of the earth and in your seed. 15 And behold, I am (anochi) with you and I will keep you in all wherever you go and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you".

16 And awoke Jacob from his sleep and said, "Surely Y-hova is in this place, and I did not know it". 17 And he was afraid (yare) and said, "what an awesome (yare) place this is! This is none other than the house of El-him; this is the gate (shaar) of heaven!"

18 And Jacob rose early the next morning and took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar (matsebah) and poured (yatzak) oil (shemen) on top of it 19 And he called the name of that place Bethel but Luz had previously been the name of city.

20 And Jacob made a vow, saying, "if El-him will be with me and keep me in this way (derech) I am going and give me bread to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I may return in peace to my father's house, then shall be Y-hova my El-him. 22 And this stone I have set up as a pillar shall be the House of EL-him and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth (asar) to You."

1  So went (vayisa) Jacob on his journey (regel) and came to the land of the sons of the East (kedem). 2 And he looked and saw a well (be'er) in the field and behold there were three flocks of sheep lying by it for out of that well they watered the flocks. And a large stone on the mouth (pi) of the well.  3 And would be gathered there all the flocks and they would roll (galal) the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep. And put back the stone on the mouth of the well in its place.

4 And said Jacob to them,  "My brothers (achai), where are you from?" and they said, "We are from Haran". 5 And he said to them, "do you know Laban the son of Nahor?" and they said, "We know him". 6 And he said to them, "Is he well (hashalom)?" And they said, "Well and look Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep".

7 And he said, "Look, yet it is still broad daylight; not it is time to gather together the livestock. Water the sheep and go pasture them". 8 And they replied, "We cannot until all the flocks have been gathered and they have rolled the stone from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep".

9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep for she pastured them. 10 And it came to pass when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother and the sheep of Laban, brother of his mother that went near Jacob and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the flock of Laban, his mother's brother. 11 And Jacob kissed (yisak) Rachel and lifted up is voice and wept. 12 And Jacob told Rachel he was a relative of her father, that he was a son of Rebecca and she ran and told her father.

13 And it came to pass, when Laban heard the report (shema) about Jacob, son of his sister, that he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to the house. So he told Laban all these things (hadevarim).

14 Then Laban said to him, "surely you are my bone (azmi) and my flesh (vesari)" and stayed with him a month (chodesh) the time (yamim), 15 And said Laban to Jacob, "because you are my relative, should you serve me for nothing? Tell me what your wages (maskoret) shall be".

16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah's eyes were delicate (rakot) and Rachel was beautiful (yephat) of form (toar) and beautiful appearance (mareh). 18 And Jacob loved Rachel so he said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter". 19 And Laban said, "it is better that I give her to you than to I should give her to another man. Stay with me". 20 So served Jacob for Rachel seven years and they seemed to him a few days because of his love for her.

21 And said Jacob to Laban, "give me my wife for my days are fulfilled that I may go into her (avoah)". 22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast (mishteh).  23 And it came to pass in the evening that he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob and he went into her. 24 And Laban gave his maidservant Zilpah to Leah his daughter as her maidservant.

25 And it came to pass in the morning, there was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, "what is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why have you deceived (ramah) me?" 26 And said Laban, "not so must be done in our country our custom here to give the younger before the firstborn (bekirah). 27 Fulfill this week (shavuah) and we will give you also this one for the service which you serve with me, still another seven years".

28 And Jacob did so. He fulfilled this week so he gave him also Rachel his daughter as his wife. 29 And gave Laban to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his maidservant (shifchato) to as her maidservant. 30 And Jacob went in also to Rachel and he loved also (gam) Rachel more than Leah. And he served with Laban still another seven years.

31 And when Y-hova saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb but Rachel was barren. 32 And Leah conceived and bore a son and she called his name him Reuben for she said, "surely Y-hova has looked on my affliction. Therefore now my husband will love me". 33 And she conceived again and bore a son and she said, "because Y-hova has heard (shama) that I am unloved, therefore He has given me also this son". And she called his name Simeon. 34 And she conceived again and bore a son and she said, "now at last my husband will become attached to me because I have borne him three sons". Upon this was called his name Levi. 35 And she conceived again and bore a son and said, "now I will praise (ohdeh) Y-hova". Upon thus she called his name Judah. And she stopped bearing.

1 And when Rachel saw that she did not bear children for Jacob, Rachel envied (canah) her sister. And said to Jacob, "give me children and if not I will die (mut)". 2 And was kindled (chara) the anger (af) of Jacob against Rachel and said, "am I in the place of El-him, who has withheld (mana) from you the fruit of the womb?" 3 And she said, "here is my maidservant Bilhah. Go into her and she will bear on my knees (berek) so that I may also have children by her".

4 And she gave to him Bilhah her maidservant as wife and Jacob went into (vaiyavo) her. 5 And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. 6 And said Rachel, "El-him has judged my case (danani) and also He has heard my voice and given me a son". Upon this she called his name Dan (Dan). 7 And conceived again and bore Bilhah maidservant of Rachel a second son to Jacob . 8 And Rachel said, "with great wrestlings (nuftuli) I have wrestled (pathal) with my sister and indeed I have prevailed (yacholeti) ". So she called his name Naphtali (Naphtali).

9 And when Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took ZIlpah her maidservant and gave her to Jacob as wife. 10 And bore ZIlpah maidservant of Leah to Jacob a son. 11 And said Leah, "How fortunate!" (begad be gad) So she named him Gad (Gad). 12 And bore Zilpah maidservant of Leah a second son to Jacob. 13 Leah said, "I am happy (beasheri) for the daughters (banot) will call me blessed (isheruni)". So she named him Asher (Asher).

14 And went Reuben during the days of the wheat harvest and he found mandrakes (duday) in the field and brought them to Leah his mother. And said Rachel to Leah, "please give to me some of your son's mandrakes". 15 But she said to her, "is it a small matter (hamat) that you have taken away (laqach) my husband? And would you take away also the mandrakes of my son?" And said Rachel, "therefore (laken) he will lie with you tonight for mandrakes of your son".

16 And when Jacob came out of the field in the evening, then went out Leah to meet him and said, "to me you must come in, for I have surely (sachor) hired you (secharticha) with mandrakes of my son". And he lay (vaiyishkav) with her that night.

17 And El-him listened to Leah and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 And said Leah, "El-him has given me my wages (sechari) because I have given my maidservant to my husband". So she named him Issachar (Yissaskar). 19 And conceived again Leah and bore a sixth son to Jacob. 20 And said Leah, "El-him has endowed (zevadani) me with a good endowment (zeved). Now will dwell (yizbeleni) with me my husband because I have borne him six sons". And she named him Zebulun (Zevulun). 21 And afterward she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah (Dinah).

22 And remembered El-him of Rachel and EL-him listened to her and opened her womb. 23 And she conceived and bore a son and said, "El-him has taken away (asaf) my reproach (cherpati)". 24 So she called his name Joseph (Yosef) and said, "shall add (yosef) Y-hova to me another son".

25 And it came to pass when Rachel had borne Joseph that Jacob said to Laban, "send me on my way that I may go to my own place and to my country. 26 Give me my wives and my children whom I have served you for and let me go (elecha). For you know my service (avodati) which I have done for you". 27 But said Laban to him, "please stay if I have found favor in your eyes. I have learned by divination (nichashti) that Y-hova has blessed me for your sake." 28 And he said, "name me your wages (secharecha) and I will give it". 29 So he said to him, "you know how I have served you and how your livestock has been with me. 30 For little (me'at) what you had very little before I came (lefanai), it has increased (vayifrotz) to a great amount (rov) and Y-hova has blessed you sine my coming. Now when shall I provide (e'eseh) also for my own house?"

31 So he said, "what can I give you?" and said Jacob, "not shall you give me anything (meumah), If you do this one thing (davar) for me, I will again feed your flock and keep (eshmor) it. 32 Let me pass (e'evor) through all your flocks today and removing (haser) from there every sheep speckled (nakod) or spotted (talu), every dark-brown (choom) among the lambs, and every spotted or speckled goat. These will be my wages. 33 So will answer for me my righteousness in time to come when the subject (tavo) comes of my wages before you. Everyone that is not speckled or spotted among the goats and dark brown among the lambs, or any lambs that are not dark-colored will be considered stolen (ganub) if it is with me". 34 And said Laban, "oh that it were according to your word (davar)". 35 So he removed that day the male goats that were speckled or spotted and all the female goats that were speckled or spotted. Every one that had any white (lavan) on it and all the dark-brown lambs he gave into the hands (b'yad) of his sons. 36 And put a journey (derech) three days between himself and Jacob and Jacob fed the remainder of Laban's flocks.

37 And took for himself Jacob branches (maqqal) of poplar (livneh), almond (luz) and plane trees (armon) and peeled (patzal) the bark, exposing (machsof) the white that was in the branches. 38 And he set the branches he had  peeled in the troughs (rahat), in the watering (mayim) troughs (shoketh) where came the flocks to drink, before the flocks, so that they should conceive (yacham) when they came to drink. So conceived the flocks before the branches and brougt forth the flocks streaked, speckled and spotted. 40 Jacob separated the lambs and made the flocks face towards the streaked and all the dark brown of the flocks of of Laban but he put his own flocks by themselves and not did he put them with the flocks of Laban.

41 And casme to pass whenever conceived the stronger of the flock, that placed Jacob the branches before the eyes of the flocks in the troughs, that they might conceive in front of the branches. 42 But when were feeble (ataf) the flocks, not did he put them in. So were the feeble of Laban and the stronger (qashar) of Jacob. 43 Thus became prosperous (vayifrotz) the man exceedingly greatly (meod). And had to him flocks large and maidservants and menservants and camels and donkeys.

1 Jacob heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, "Jacob has taken away (laqach) all that was of our father and from what was our father's has aquired all this wealth (cavod)". 2 And Jacob saw from the countenance (phenei) of Laban and indeed it was not favourable (einenu) towards him as before. 3 And said Y-hova to Jacob, "return to the land of your fathers and your family and I will be (eyeh) with you".

4 So sent (vayishlach) Jacob and called (vayikra) Rachel and Leah to the field to his flock 5 and said to them, "I can see the countenance of your father that it is not towards me as before but the G-d (El-hei) of my father has been with me. 6 And you know that with all my might (kochi) I have served your father. 7 And your father has deceived (hetel) me and has changed (chalaf) my wages ten times but El-him did not allow him to hurt (ra) me. 8 If thus he said, 'the speckled shall be your wages', then bore all the flocks speckled. And if thus he said, 'the streaked shall be your wages', then bore all the flocks streaked. 9 So has taken away El-him the livestock of your father and given them to me.

10 And came to pass at the time the flocks conceived that I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream (chalom) that behold the rams (attud) went upon (olim) the streaked, speckled and spotted flock. 11 And spoke to me the angel (malak) of El-him, 'Jacob!' and I said 'here I am'. 12 And He said, 'lift now your eyes and see all the rams that leap on the streaked, spotted, and speckled, for I have seen all that Laban has done to you. 13 I am the G-d (E-) of Bethel (-el), where you anointed (mashach) the pillar (matzevah) and where you made to Me a vow (neder). Now arise get out of this land and return to the land of your family".

14 And answered (tanah) Rachel and Leah and said to him, "do we have any portion or inheritance (nachala) in the house of our father? 15 Are not strangers (nacheriot) we considered (nechshavnu) by him? For he has sold (mecharanu) us and consumed (yochal) also completely (achol) our money (kaspenu). 16 For all the riches El-him has taken from our father are ours and our children. And now, all that El-him has said to you, do it".

17 And rose Jacob and set his sons and his wives on camels (gamal) 18 and he carried away all his livestock and all his possessions (rechusho) which he had gained (rachash), his acquired (kinyanoh) livestock which he had gained in Paddan-Aram (Aram) to go to Isaac his father in the land in Canaan (Canaan).

19 Now Laban had gone to shear (ligzoz) his sheep and had stolen Rachel the household idols (teraphim) that were unto her father. 20 And stole away unknown (ganav) Jacob, deception of the heart (et-lev) towards Laban the Aramean (Arammi) in that not (beli) did he tell (higgid) him that he intended to flee (voreach). 21 So he fled with all that he had and he arose (vayakam) and crossed (yavor) the river (nahar) and set his face towards the hill country of Gilead (Har HaGilad). 22 And was told Laban on the third day that had fled Jacob. 23 So he took his brothers with him and pursued (yirdof) him, journey (derech) for seven days. And overtook him in the hill country of Gilead. 24 But had come El-him to Laban the Aramean in a dream (chalom) and said to him, "take heed (hishamer) to it lest you speak to Jacob neither good or bad".

25 So overtook Laban Jacob. And Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country and Laban pitched with his brothers in the hill country of Gilead. 26 And Laban said to Jacob, "what have you done that you have stolen away unknown to me and carried away my daughters captives (shabar) with the sword (charev) 27 Why did you flee secretly and steal away from me and not tell me? For I may have sent you away with joy (simcha) and singing (shirim), with tambourines (tof) and harps (chinnor). 28 And not did you allow me to kiss my sons and my daughters? Now you have done foolishly in doing so. 29 It is in my power (le'el) to do you evil (ra) but the G-d (El-hei) of your father last night spoke to me saying 'be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good or bad. 30 Now surely you have gone because you long (kasaf) for the house of your father But why did you steal (ganav) my gods (elohei)?"

31 And answered Jacob and said to Laban, " because I was afraid (yareti), for I said thought perhaps you would take by force (tigzol) your daughters from me. 32 With whoever you find your gods, not do let him live! In the presence of our brothers, identify (hakker) of yours what is with me and take it with you" for not did know Jacob that Rachel had stolen them.

33 So went Laban into the tent (ochel) of Jacob and into the tent of Leah and into the tents of the two maidservants but not he did find them. And he went out of Leah's tent and entered Rachel's tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household idols and put them in the saddlebag of her camel and sat on them. And searched Laban all about the tent but not did find them.

35 And she said to her father, "not let it displease my lord that I cannot rise before you; for the manner of women is with me". And he searched but not did find the household idols.

36 And was angry Jacob and rebuked (rib) Laban. "what is my trespass (pishi)? What is my sin that you have so hotly pursued me? 37 Although you have searched all my things! what have you found of all the things? Of your household set  it here before my brothers and your brothers, that they may judge between the two of us.

38 This twenty years I have been with you, your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried (shakol) and the rams of your flock not have I eaten. 39 That which was torn by beasts not did I bring you; I bore the loss of it. From my hand you required it whether stolen by day or stolen by night. 40 There I was consumed (achalani) by the heat in the day and the frost (kerach) by night and sleep departed from my eyes.

41 This is my twenteith year in your house. I have served you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks and you have changed (chalaf) my wages ten times. 42 Unless the G-d (El-hei) of my father, the G-d (El-hei) of Abraham and the fear (fachad) of Isaac had been with me, surely now empty-handed you would have sent me away. My affliction and the labour of my hands has seen G-d (El-him) and He rendered judgment (yochach) last night".

43 And answered Laban and said to Jacob, "these daughters are my daughters, these sons are my sons and this flock is my flock. And all that you see is mine. But my daughters what can I do to these today or to their children whom they have borne? 44 Therefore now come, let us make a covenant (brit), I and you and let it be a witness between me and you".

45 So took Jacob a stone (aven) and set it up as a pillar (matzevah) 46 and said Jacob to his brothers, "gather stones". And they took stones and made a heap and they ate there on the heap. 47 And called it Laban Jegar-Sahadutha (Sahaduta), and Jacob called it Galeed (Galed). 48 And said Laban, "this mound is a witness between me and you this day". Upon thus was called its name Galeed. 49 And also Mizpah (Mizpah) because said, "may watch (yitzsef) Y-hova between me and you when we are absent (nissater) from one another. 50 If you afflict my daughters or take other wives besides (ul) my daughters, no man is with us, see El-him is a witness between me and you".

51 And said Laban to Jacob, "here is this mound and here is this pillar which I have placed between me and you. 52 A witness mound this is and a witness pillar, that I will not pass beyond to you this mound and you will not pass beyond to me this mound and this pillar for harm. 53 The G-d (El-hei) of Abraham and the G-d (El-hei) of Nahor, may they judge between us, G-d (El-hei) of their father". And swore Jacob swore by the fear (befachad) of his father Isaac.

54 And offered Jacob a sacrifice on the mountain and called his brothers to eat bread. And they ate bread and stayed all night on the mountain.

1 And arose early Laban in the morning and kissed his sons and daughters and blessed them and departed. And returned Laban to his place (macom).

1 So Jacob went on his way and met him the angels (malachei) of G-d (El-him). 2 And said Jacob when he saw them, "this is the camp (machaneh) of G-d (El-him)". And he called the name of the place that Mahanaim (Machanaim).
