Vayeshev 37:1-40:23

1 And dwelt Jacob lived in the land of the sojourn of his father, in the land of Canaan. 2 These are the generations of Jacob. When Joseph was seven and ten years old, he was feeding with his brothers the flock. And the boy was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, wives of his father and he brought a report (dibatam) bad (ra'ah)  about them to their father (avihem).

3 And Israel loved (ahav) Joseph more than all his other sons, because the son of old age he was unto him and he made him a robe (ketonet) of many colours (passim). 4 When saw his brothers that him loved their father more than all his brothers then they hated (sane) him and could not speak to him peaceably (leshalom).

5 And had Joseph a dream (chalom) and he told it to his brothers and even more they hated him. 6 So he said to them, "hear, please, this dream, which I have dreamed. 7 And there we were, binding (meallemim) sheaves (allumim) in the field and behold (hinneh)! Arose my sheaf rose and stood upright (nitzavah) and indeed stood around sheaves and bowed down (tishtachaveina)  to my sheaf".

8 And said to him his brothers, "or indeed (hamaloch) you reign (timloch) over us (aleinu)? Or  (im) indeed (mashol) shall you have dominion (timshol) over us?" So even more they hated him for his dream and his words (devarav).

9 And he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers and said. "behold! I had dreamed another dream and this time the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me."

10 So he told it to his father and his brothers and rebuked (yigar) him his father and said to him, "what indeed is this dream you have dreamed? Shall indeed (havo) come (navo) I, your mother and your brothers  to bow down (histachavot) before you to the ground?" 11 And envied (aykanu) him his brothers but his father observed (shamar) the matter (hadavar).

12 And went his brothers to pasture their father's flocks in Shechem. 13 And said Israel to Joseph, "are not (halo) your brothers pasturing (roim) in Shechem? Come and I will send (eshlachacha) you to them". So he said, "here I am (hineini)". 14 And he said, "go please and see (re'eh) if it is well (shelom) with your brothers and well with the flocks and bring back (vehashiveini) to me word".

So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron (Chevron) and he went to Shechem. 15 And found him a man (ish) and he was wandering (toeh) in the field and asked him the man, saying, "what are you seeking (tevakesh)?" 16 "My brothers I am seeking, tell (hagiddah) please me where they are pasturing?" 17 And said the man, "they have departed (naseu) from this place for I heard them say, 'let us go up to Dothan (Dotayenah)'". So went Joseph after his brothers and found them in Dothan (Dotan).

18 Now when they saw him afar off (merachok), before (uveterem) he came near (yikrav) unto them, they conspired against (yitnakelu) him to kill him (hamito). 19 And they said one (ish) to (el) another (achiv), "look dreamer (baal hachalamot) this (halazeh) is coming (ba)! 20 Therefore (veatah) come (lechu) let us kill him (venahargehu) and cast him (venashlichehu) into one of the pits (haborot) and we will say a beast (chaiyah) wild (ra'ah) has devoured (achaletehu) him. And we will see what becomes (yihyu) of his dreams".

21 And heard it Reuben and delivered (yatzilehu) them out of their hands and said, "not let us take his life". 22 And said to them Reuben, "not to shed blood but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness. And a hand do not lay on him" that he might deliver him out of their hands (miyadim) and bring him back (lahashivo) to his father.

23 So it came to pass when Joseph came to his brothers that they stripped (yafshitu) Joseph of his robe - the robe of many colors that was on him - 24 and they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty (rek) with no water in it.

25 And they sat down (yashevu) to eat (echol) a meal and they lifted (yisu) their eyes (eineihem) and looked and there was a company (orechat) of Ishmaeites coming from Gilead. And with their camels carrying spices (nechot), balm (tzeri) and myrrh (lot) on their way to carry them down (lehorid) to Egypt.

26 So said Judah to his brothers, "what profit (betza) is there if we kill our brother and conceal (chissinu) his blood? 27 Come and let us sell him (nimkerenu) to the Ishmaelites and our hand not let be upon him; for our brother and our flesh he is". And listened his brothers 28 and passed by men Midianite traders (socharim). So they pulled up (yimshechu) and lifted up (ya'alu) Joseph out of the pit and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver (kasef). And they took Joseph to Egypt.

29 Then returned (yashav) Reuben to the pit and not (ein) was Joseph in the pit. And he tore his clothes (begadav). 30 And returned to his brothers, and said, "the boy is no more (einenu)! And I where shall I go?". 31 So then they took (yikchu) the robe of Joseph and slaughtered a kid (seir) of the goats and dipped (yitbelu) the robe in the blood. 32 And they sent (yeshalechu) the robe of many colours and they brought (yaviu) it to their father and said, "this we have found (mazanu). Do you know (haker) now the robe of your son it is (hi), whether or (im) not?". 

33 And recognised (yakirah) it and said, "the robe of my son! A wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt (tarof) is torn to pieces (toraf) Joseph". 34 And tore Jacob his clothes and put sackcloth (sak) on his waist and mourned for his son many (rabbim) days. 35 And arose (yakumu) all his sons and his daughters to comfort him (lenachamo) but he refused (yema'en) to be comforted and he said, "I shall go down (ered) for my son in mourning (avel) to Sheol (sheolah)". And wept (yevek) for him his father.

36 And the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer (seris) of Pharaoh and captain (sar) of the guard (tabachim).

1 And it came to pass at that time,  departed Judah from his brothers and settled near an Adullamite (Adullami) man and his name was Hirah (Chirah). 2 And saw there Judah a daughter of a Canaanite man whose name was Shua (Shua) and he married her and went into her. 3 And she conceived and bore a son and he called his name him Er (Er). 4 And she conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan (Onan). 5 And she conceived yet again and bore a son and called his name Shelah (Shelah); it he was at Chezib (Keziib) when she bore him.

6 And took Judah a wife for Er (Er), his firstborn and her name was Tamar (Tamar). 7 But was Er, firstborn of Judah, wicked (ra) in the sight of Y-hova and killed him Y-hova. 8 And said Judah to Onan, "go into the wife of your brother and marry her and raise up an heir for your brother".

9 But knew Onan that not his would be the heir and it came to pass when he went into the wife of his brother, he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. 10 And displeased (yera) in the sight Y-hova the thing which he did, therefore he killed also him.

11 And said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "remain a widow in the house of your father until is grown Shelah". For he said, "lest die also he, like his brothers". And went Tamar dwelt in the house of her father.

12 In the course of time, died the daughter of Shua, wife of Judah. And was comforted (yinachem) Judah and went up to the shearers of sheep; he and Hirah his friend the Adullamite at Timnah (Timnah). 13 And it was told Tamar, saying "behold your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep". 14 So she took off her garments of widowhood from her and covered (techas) herself with a veil and wrapped (titalaf) herself. And sat at the entrance to Enaim (enayim), that was on the way to Timnah. For she saw that was grown Shelah and not she had been given to him as a wife.

15 And when saw her, Judah, he thought she was a harlot (zonah) because she had covered her face. 16 And he turned to her by the way and said, "come now, let me come into you". For not did he know that his daughter-in-law she was. So she said, "what will you give me that you may come into me?". 17 And he said, "I will send a young goat from the flock". And she said, "only if you give me a pledge (eravon), until you send it". 18 And he said, "what pledge shall I give you?". And she said, "your seal (chotamecha) and your cord (fetilecha) and your staff (matecha) that in your hand". So he gave them to her and went into her and she conceived by him. 19 So she arose and went away and laid aside her veil upon and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20 And sent Judah the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite to receive his pledge from the hand of the woman but not did he find her. 21 And he asked the men of that place, saying, "where is the harlot? she was in Enaim by the road side". And they said, "no there was in this place a harlot". 22 So he returned to Judah and said, "I cannot find (matza) her and the men of that place said, 'not there was a harlot in this place". 23 And said Judah, "let her take (tikach) for herself, lest we be shamed (lavuz), for I sent this young goat and you have not found her".

24 And it came to pass after about three months that Judah was told, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot and furthermore behold, she is pregnant by harlotry". So said Judah, "bring her out and let her be burned (tisaref)". 25 When she was being brought out, then she sent to her father-in-law, saing "by the man to whom these belong I am pregnant". And she said, "determine (haker) please, to whom is this seal and cord and staff these?" 26 So he acknowledged (yaker) them Judah and said, "she is more righteous (tzadecha) than I because upon thus not did I give her Shelah my son". And never again (yasaf) more he knew her.

27 And it came to pass at the time for giving birth that behold, twins (teomim) were in her womb. 28 And so it was when she was giving birth that one put out his hand. And took the midwife and tied (tikshor) on his hand a scarlet (shani) thread saying, "this one came out first". 29 And it came to pass as he drew back his hand, behold came out his brother. And she said, "how have you broken forth (paratzta)? upon you is a breach (paretz)". Therefore was called his name Perez (Paretz). 30 And aterward came out his brother who had on his hand the scarlet thread and was called his name Zerah (Zarach).

1 And Joseph had been taken down to Egypt and bought (kanah) him Potiphar, an officer (seris) of Pharaoh, captain (sar) of the guard, an Egyptian man, from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there. 2 And was G-d (Y-hova) with Joseph and he was a successful (matzliach) man and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian (Mitzri).

3 And saw his master that G-d (Y-hova) was with him and all that he did, G-d (Y-hova) made to prosper in his hand. 4 So found Joseph favor (chen) in his sight and he served him and he made him overseer (pakad) of his house and all that he had to him he put in his hand.

5 And it was from then on that he made him overseer of his house and all that he had. And blessed G-d (Y-hova) the house of the Egyptian on account of Joseph. And was the blessing of G-d (Y-hova) on all that he had in the house and in his field. 6 Thus he left all that he had in the hand of Joseph; he did not concern (yada) himself with anything except for the bread which he ate.

And was Joseph handsome (yefeh) in form (toar) and handsome in appearance (mareh), 7 and it came to pass after these things that cast (tissa) the wife of his master her eyes (eneha) on Joseph and said, "lie (shichvah) with me (immi)". 8 But he refused (maen) and said to the wife of his master, "behold, my master does not concern (yada) with me what is in the house, and all he has committed (natan) to my hand. 9 There is no one greater in this house is than I. Nor has he kept back (chasach) from me anything except you because you are his wife. Then how could I do this great wickedness (haraar) and sin (chata) against G-d (El-him)?" 10 So it was she she spoke to Joseph day (yom) after day that not he did heed (shama) her to lie with her or to be (liyot) with her.

11 But it came to pass about this time that Joseph went into the house to do his work and not a man (ish) of the men (meanshei) the house was there. 12 And she caught him (titpesehu) by his garment and said, "lie with me!" but he left his garment (bevigdo) in her hand and fled and ran outside. 13 And so it was when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside 14 that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them saying, "look, he has brought in a Hebrew man to mock (letzachek) us. He came to lie with me and I cried out in a loud (gadol) voice. 15 And it came to pass when he heard I had lifted my voice and cried out that he left his garment with me and fled (vaiyanos) and went outside (hachutza)".

16 So she kept his garment with her her until his master came home. 17 And she spoke to him with words like these, saying, "came into me the Hebrew servant whom you brought us to mock (letzahek) me 18 and it came to pass when I lifted (harimoti) my voice and cried out (vaekra) that he left his garment with me and fled outside". 19 So it was, when heard his master the words (divrei) of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, "after this (haeleh) manner your servant did to me" and was kindled (vaiyichar) his wrath (appo). 20 And took (yikach) him the master of Joseph and put him into the house of imprisonment (hassohar); a place where the prisoners of the king were confined (asurim). And he was there in the prison.

21 And was G-d (Y-hova) with Joseph and showed him mercy (chased) and gave him favour (chinno) in the sight of the keeper (sar) of the prison. 22 And committed the keeper of the prison into the hand of Joseph all the prisoners who were in the prison and all that they did there, it was his doing. 23 Not the keeper of the prison concerned himself with all the things in his hand because G-d (Y-hova) was with him and whatever he did, G-d (Y-hova) made it prosper (matzliach).

1 And it came to pass after these things that offended (cha'etu) the cupbearer (mashkeh) of the king of Egypt and the baker their lord, the king of Egypt. 2 And was angry (yiqsof) Pharaoh with his two officers; upon the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 so he put them in custody (mishmar) in the house of the captain of the guard, in the house the prison, the place where Joseph was confined (asur). 4 And charged the captain (sar) of the guard (tabach) Joseph with them and he served them. So they were a while (yamim) in custody.

5 And had a dream (chalom) the two of them, each man's dream in one night (belailah). And each man with it's own interpretation the dream, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison (sohar).

6 And came into them Joseph in the morning and looked (vayar) at them and saw (vehinam) they were sad (zoafim). 7 So he asked the officials of Pharaoh who were with him in custody of the house of his lord, "why do you look so sad (raim) today?"

8 And they said to him, "a dream we have dreamed and there is no interpreter (patar) of it". And said to them Joseph, "do not interpretations belong to G-d (El-him)? Tell (saperu) them please to me".

9 And told the chief cupbearer his dream to Joseph and said to him, "in my dream behold there a vine (gefen) was before me 10 and in the vine three branches (sarigim). And it was as though it budded (cheforachat), shot forth (aletah) its blossoms (nitzah), brought forth clusters of ripe grapes. 11 And the cup (kos) of Pharaoh was in my hand and I took the grapes and pressed (sachat) them into the cup of Pharoah and placed the cup in the hand of Pharaoh".

12 And said to him Joseph, "this is the interpretation (pitrono) of it: the three branches are three days (yamim). 13 Within now three days Pharaoh will lift up (yissa) your head (roshecha) and restore (shoov) you to your place (kannecha). And you will put the cup of Pharaoh in his hand, according to the manner (kamishpat) former (harishon) when you were his cupbearer. 14 For if you remember (zechartani) with me when it is well (yitav) with you and show please to me kindness and make mention of me to Pharaoh and get me out (hozetani) of this house. 15 For indeed I was stolen (ganavti) away from the land of the Hebrews and also here have I not done anything (meumah) that they should put me in the dungeon (bor)".

16 And when saw the chief baker that was good (tov) the interpretation, then he said to Joseph, "also I was in my dream. And there were three baskets (sal) of white bread (chori) on my head. 17 And in the uppermost (elyon) were all sorts of baked (aphah) works (maaseh) for Pharaoh and the birds (oph) ate (ochel) them out of the basket on my head".

18 And answered (anah) Joseph and said, "this is the interpretation of it. The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift off (yissa/nasa) your head and hang (talah) you on a tree. And will eat the birds your flesh (besarecha/basar) from you".

20 And it came to pass on the third day, the birthday (yom huledet) of Pharaoh that he made a feast (mishteh) for all his servants. And he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker among his servants. 21 And he restored again the chief cupbearer to his cupbearership and he placed the cup in the hand of Pharaoh. 22 But the chief baker he hanged, as had interpreted to them Joseph.

23 And not did remember (zakar) the chief cupbearer, Joseph and forgot (shakach) about him.
